The aim of this special issue is to put forth the state-of-the art research outcomes in the area of Production Research for the analysis, design, co-ordination, control of manufacturing and service system operations. Modern production firms witness tremendous pressures while striving to become more innovative in their usage of leading-edge cost reduction paradigms such as cost-driven pricing which is difficult to achieve in the volatile competitive market. The theme of this issue is relatively broader and pervasive in the sense that it includes the analysis of cutting edge and future proof production technology at all levels of production planning and control. The fundamental approach would be seeking for the emerging trends in production research in terms of supply chain dynamics, cost optimization with resource and cost constraints, gaining competitive advantage through operational efficiency, integrated productivity, quality models and their trend analysis, recent developments in production research with the application of quantitative techniques, optimization techniques (through advanced software applications) for managerial decision-making process. Manuscripts that focus on the functional and operational aspects of production research are invited. Studies that investigate emerging practices, concepts and cases related to in-bound production system as well as out-bound production system are also invited. This study will be an extensive framework for integrating multiple disciplines such as Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences, Operations Research, Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Inventory Management, Total Quality Management, Resource Management, Cost Management and Business Trend analysis. Manuscripts that focus on the operations of other non-manufacturing related service systems will also be considered as long as they demonstrate that these operations are strongly related to manufacturing systems operations in terms of their characteristics and the methodologies used to analyze them.
