Abstract

Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) holds a unique position in various regions such as foods, health products, and cosmetics as both a medicinal and edible plant. It is rich in various bioactive constituents, including anthraquinones, flavonoids, iridoid terpenoids, saccharides, and coumarins. These constituents along with crude noni extracts exhibit a variety of health benefits, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertension, anti-diabetic and hepatoprotective effects, with great development potential in the fields of food and health products. Liver toxicity of noni juice has also been reported, and evaluation of safety and toxicity of noni become essential for future use. Nowadays, the innovation and application of noni products have expanded, particularly in the fields of skincare, health supplements, industrial applications, etc. This review provides an overview of recent advances in the bioactive constituents, health benefits, safety evaluation, and future applications and perspectives of noni, providing a scientific basis for the development of noni-based products.
