Abstract

Objective: To assess the health risks associated with the consumption of the muscles of two fish species, Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppell, 1852) and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacépède, 1803), contaminated by trace metals (TMEs) in Taabo Lake. For this purpose, the levels of four (4) TMEs, zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were investigated, according to standard methods, in the muscles of 30 fish of each species caught in Taabo Lake. Once this basis was established, the assessment of the health risks associated with the consumption of the muscles of these fish contaminated by these trace elements in children and adults in the study locality was carried out. The results show that with hazard quotients greater than 1 for Cd, Hg and Pb exposure related to the consumption of the muscles of two fish species studied, the probability of a carcinogenic effect is high in children and adults in the study area. Also, for RC values greater than 10-4 for Cd, Hg and Pb exposures in children and adults, a carcinogenic risk remains evident in these parts of the population in the study area.
