abstract={In the present study, we have evaluated the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of <i>Spirulina platensis</i> against CCl<SUB>4</SUB>-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Activities of liver marker enzymes; Alanine transaminase and Aspartate transaminasewere estimated, as well as lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status (glutathione peroxidase) were determined in liver homogenate. DNA damage in liver was also evaluated by means of Comet assay. CCl<SUB>4</SUB> induction (1 mg/kg b.wt) significantly increases the levels of liver marker enzymesand lipid peroxidation, and caused the depletion of antioxidant status. Treatment of <i>Spirulinaplatensis</i> (800mg/kg/b.wt) to CCl<SUB>4</SUB> challenged mice resulted in decreased liver marker enzymes activity, DNA damage and lipid peroxidation levels with increase in antioxidant status. Our study clearly demonstrates that <i>Spirulina platensis</i> shows hepatoprotective effect through its antioxidant activity on CCl<SUB>4</SUB>-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.},
