Special Issue on Intelligent Materials for Solar Cells

Since ancient times, advances in the development of materials and energy have defined and limited human social, technological and political aspirations. The modern era, with instant global communication and the rising expectations of developing nations, poses energy challenges greater than ever seen before. Energy is the single most valuable resource for human activity and the basis for all human progress. Materials play a key role in enabling technologies that can offer promising solutions to achieve renewable and sustainable energy pathways for the future. Energy Materials covers current research on materials for energy (all aspects of thermal, renewable and nuclear power generation and the transmission and storage of the energy produced). Access to energy is critical to the wealth, lifestyle and self-image of every country.

Driven by the need for renewable energy generation, the last decade has produced a substantial growth of research into a variety of solar cell technologies worldwide. Efficient generation and low cost of ownership present significant challenges for scientists and engineers in the fabrication, characterization and implementation of photovoltaics. Different types of quantum dot nanostructures are actively being developed and offer real opportunities to overcome the obstacles which prevent the widespread uptake of solar cell technology, as well as being of considerable scientific interest. This special issue seeks to highlight recent developments of solar cells encompassing both fundamental and technological advances on materials science and technology related to photovoltaic, photothermal photoelectrochemical, solar energy conversion....... Materials science is taken in the broadest possible sense and encompasses physics, chemistry, optics, materials fabrication and analysis for all types of materials.

About the issue

This Special Issue covers a large scope of research in material advances energy technologies, and solicits contributions in, but not limited to:

  • Materials - advanced characterization techniques High-strength;
  • Materials for power electronics;

    • Wide band gap semiconductors
    • (SiC, ZnO, diamond, ...)
    • Hard and soft magnetic materials




  • Photovoltaic materials and processes;
  • Materials - modeling and theoretical aspects;
  • Light-induced charge carrier dynamics at nanostructured interfaces;

  • Materials for renewable and sustainable fuel production;

  • Quantum dot intermediate band solar cells;
  • Nanocomposites in solar cells
