Special Issue Information

Manufacturing systems generate enormous amount of data and that data is a key to: (1) evaluate short- and long-term strategic implications of systems; (2) reduce time to market mass production; (3) identify root cause of the problem; (4) assist in the creation an embedded system through connecting several sub systems; (5) improve product/process quality on a continuum basis; (6) reduce overall systems cost; (7) improve productivity; (8) create knowledge that develops smart inspection techniques; and (9) better monitor and control the manufacturing processes.

Smart manufacturing system is about using advanced analytical tools and techniques (for example: machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud-computing) and breakthrough technologies (for example: smart sensors, advanced robotics) to reduce manufacturing cost and improve product quality, manufacturing productivity and safety. This motivates the research on developing advanced analytical techniques to cost-effectively collect manufacturing data as well as on investigating systematic and holistic methods to integrate advanced tools and breakthrough technologies.
